60 seconds with… ATPI’s Yolanda Logt

Yolanda Logt has more than 30 years’ experience in the travel industry, the majority of which has been spent in the meetings and events sector. In 2013, she joined ATPI as Manager, Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Events and is part of the management team for ATPI Corporate Events in the Netherlands. Prior to that, Yolanda held various positions at Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT), including Commercial Director at CWT Meetings & Events. She also set up her own consultancy and SHARE TODAY, an international network and platform for the meetings & events industry. Outside of work, her biggest hobbies are travel, a good book, nice food and perfect wine.

Brand promise

What’s trending in 2018
The key trends I am seeing in 2018 is the importance of integrating live communication in your marketing mix, as well as a focus on ROI and measuring the effectiveness of events. Compliance is getting more and more important and pure incentive travel is not common anymore. There always has to be a business reason or business element(s) in the programme. Destination trends differ every year. Last year we had lots of travel to Lapland and Iceland as well as Hvar. This year we see an interest in faraway destinations like Thailand, Japan and Cambodia.

Luxury defined
Luxury for me is having the ability to travel and being fortunate to do so to places that often are in remote areas in an independent way. Luxurious accommodation for me can be a tented safari camp, a boutique hotel, or an old castle or farm. The location is important as well as the guest experience.

Townhouse or treehouse?
It all depends on the destination. During Safaris I prefer tented accommodation as it feels closer to nature. In the city, I rather stay at a boutique hotel or even Airbnb to really discover the city and its people instead of staying at a chain hotel. I always meet a lot of inspiring people and get to know the destination better this way.

The Bucket List
Definitely the Okavango Delta, which I will see in October. Followed by the Galapagos, South Pole, Madagascar and Nova Scotia. Nature fascinates me, especially wide-open spaces and special creatures, you feel so tiny and respectful. Earth is a beautiful place with lots to discover.

The Taj hotels in India – those old palaces are so beautiful.

When my team delivers the utmost which we first thought it was not possible: The Awesome moment.

It’s all in the detail…
Check, check and double check: whether it’s taking care of enough food at buffets, checking sound, flags, informing the next destination your group is arriving etc., it’s all about details that matters. The dot on the i. A detail the client does notice but certainly makes a difference is if you know their guests by name. People in general like to be addressed with their name and are pleasantly surprised that you can.

What inspires you?
Certainly people and destinations like Africa in particular. Learning other cultures makes you more complete as a human being and gives you a better understanding of why things happen or happened. I think that’s the reason why I ended up in this profession. One of my most special encounters was with Neil Darish, known for the TV- series ‘Edge of Alaska’. Others who inspire me are Jimmy Nelson, a photographer and great speaker, Paul Theroux (great writer and programme maker) and many more…

Aperol or Agua?
I love wines combined with good food. My favourite wines are the whites like the Picpoul de Pinet, Grillo or a nice Verdejo, but also red wines especially the Italian (Amarone, Valpolicella and Barolo) are delicious. For celebrations I would choose a pink champagne.

Final word…
Don’t take no for an answer. There is always a way just open your mind…. You will be surprised! My advice for event clients is: Before you make an enquiry, have your data clear and ready and a budget in mind. Ask yourself what you want to achieve by your event and build on your past experience and successes.  Sometimes it’s better to have several events with more attention moments over a longer period of time than one big event absorbing all your budget. Teamwork is key to delivering successful events. It’s really important to allow your event agency to be an extension to your own team, working together from the beginning and especially when defining your goal, not only at the point when event or incentive has to be arranged, to get the ultimate results.
