Richard Joslin on… the evolution of inVOYAGE

As inVOYAGE celebrates its fifth anniversary in Ras Al Khaimah this week and we publish our 100th inSPIRE edit, inVOYAGE founder and CEO Richard Joslin looks back on the highlights of the last five years…

It’s the 100th inSPIRE edit this week – what were the reasons behind first launching a newsletter for the inVOYAGE community and how has it evolved?
We launched inSPIRE to do exactly that – inspire events professionals with bite-sized targeted reviews of luxury hotels and new launches as well as DMC’s and destinations. In it’s evolution we’ve been able to introduce 60 second interviews of industry leaders and events professionals to drive deeper and more personable content.

This year’s event in RAK is the fifth inVOYAGE event – how has the event grown and changed since its debut?
It feels like only yesterday that we launched the first inVOYAGE in Portugal but the shape, content and profile of the event has gone through an amazing shift. We set out to bring together the best high-end buyers with luxury venues and destinations and it’s been exciting to see that develop through each destination we’ve take the event to. inVOYAGE grows a little every year and we’re deeply indebted to the companies and individuals who support what we’re shaping.

Looking back over the last five years, what have been the key highlights?
Breaking even! No, seriously, when I look at it what I love the most is seeing how inVOYAGE has engaged event professionals and the luxury hospitality sector in a format that enables them to develop stronger business relationship and opportunities.  Something we love doing with inVOYAGE is working with a host destination, its luxury venues and a host DMC in a completely non-traditional way to shake things up, having some fun with the event and demonstrating something different or unique.

And what lessons have you learned during that time?
Stay true to ourselves and our values. Treat people as we would like to be treated. Never stand still – always be challenging ourselves to be creating, deliver to the next level and continually raise the bar.

What are the main differences with this year’s event in RAK compared with previous events?
I love the fact that we’ve been able to debut a new and burgeoning incentive and events destination and an amazing hotel in the Waldorf Astoria. We’ve been able to work with RAK Tourism to develop a series of offsite networking activities in the desert, the mountains and even on the sea. We have more buyers than ever and a very senior level delegation with big increases from the UK, Germany, USA, France and more.

What’s your vision for evolving the brand and event over the next five years?
Secret!  What I can tell you is that inSPIRE is central to how we want to develop and reaching our 100th issue is a great milestone. We want to grow ever-closer to our luxury incentives and events sector and be able to deliver inspiration and opportunity for our community.

Any thoughts on what inVOYAGE 2025 might look like?
Definitely secret!  I’m hoping it’s going to be serious fun in getting there though.
