Venice’s Most Anticipated Event

Every year, as the third weekend of July approaches, Venetians begin preparations for a much adored centuries-old tradition: La Festa del Redentore (Redeemer’s Feast). The Redentore began as a feast to give thanks to the most Holy Redeemer for the end of the terrible plague of 1576. A church dedicated to the Redeemer was built on the Giudecca and consecrated in 1592.

Ever since, on this weekend a temporary bridge connects the Giudecca with Venice, allowing Venetians to pay pilgrimage.   On the Saturday Venetians gather with friends in boats and around the waterfront, feasting merrily as they await the spectacular fireworks which light up St. Mark’s Basin.

The Gritti Palace, Hotel Danieli and The Westin Europa & Regina offer a unique location to enjoy this celebration.
