The first Design Hotels member in the Tanzanian archipelago has just opened its doors, bringing a boutique property that fuses contemporary design and traditional African craftsmanship to the dreamy island of Zanzibar.
Taking its name from the Swahili word for “beautiful”, Zuri Zanzibar is nestled on 300 metres of prime west-facing Kendwa beach, on the north western coast of Zanzibar’s main island of Unguja – a sun-drenched spot perfect for beach-lounging and snorkelling.
Its 55 luxury villas and bungalows epitomise modern-meets-traditional African design, with the whole approach guided by environmentally sustainable methods.
Indoor and outdoor areas are blurred, with each villa featuring its own expansive terrace and outdoor shower. Custom-crafted regional artworks have been produced by local artisans, including handmade wall murals, spice motif carved doors, beaded curtains, and lotus flower decorations.
The dining experiences at Zuri Zanzibar feature a mix of African, European, Arabic, and Indian cuisines, with options ranging from casual beach beers and bites to the chic venue Upendo.
Other features include an outdoor 32-meter infinity pool, an extensive library and movie collection, pool table, water sports, a wellness centre with outdoor gym and a yoga studio and a 1.6-hectare Spice Garden.
Guests can also enjoy cooking classes with one of the hotel’s chefs at the central Spice House – an interactive and authentic way to discover more about Swahili cooking and ideal activity for incentive groups.
