Nature experiences in Malaysian Borneo

Nestling along the three-kilometre Pantai Dalit beach, Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa is home to a 64-acre protected nature reserve which forms the backdrop to the property’s new immersive programme of experiences.

Guests can head to the reserve via the Discovery Centre to learn about the indigenous creatures including long-tailed macaques, western tarsiers, bear cats and famous huge-eyed slow loris than inhabit the reserve alongside more than 60 species of birds, 100 species of butterflies, pangolins and a wealth of flora and fauna.

The centre also serves as the gateway to the reserve’s trail system which offers six two-hour routes through the tropical jungle, taking in herbs, adventure pursuits, wildlife and canopy. From the viewing platform of the watering hole, lucky guests can keep their eyes peeled for sightings of the pangolin.

Guests can set off an early hike to the Ria Lookout summit platform and be rewarded with a stunning sunrise vista views across Sabah’s iconic Mount Kinabalu.

And for the most authentic local experience, spend time with the Bajau and Dusun tribes of Tuaran, who keep their culture alive by sharing their customs, festivals, handicraft and authentic cuisine with visitors. Well-known for their warmth and friendly hospitality, guests can enjoy dishes such as Hinava (main course), Kueh Penjaram (dessert) and Pakis Vegetable alongside an evening of traditional dance and entertainment.

Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts will be attending inVOYAGE 2019 on 6-9 October in Monaco.
